Healing plant presentations


Franson of Pohnpei spoke on the use of the trunk of the banana tree to treat wounds and bruises. The core of the trunk is pounded and applied as a poultice.

Beverly from Woleai brought in Terminalia catappa, called gasas in Woleaian. The g was not a hard g. 


Israel spoke on the medicinal effects of soursop leaf tea.

Jeremy of Pohnpei aptly demonstrated how to scrape the inside of a banana tree trunk to produce the medicine that Franson had spoken on earlier. Jeremy cut the banana trunk open and demonstrated an alternate technique to pounding to generate banana tree trunk core shavings for use on bruises and scratches on the skin.

Pamella Jean from Madolehnihmw covered the healing uses of Piper methysticum including relieving stress, easing anxiety, resolving headaches, and treating minor aches and pains.

Frita explained the use of topwuk leaves to make a tea which treats stomach ache. 

Vinola explained the use of mwehk leaves, Glochidion ramiflorum, to treat loss of appetite in babies. The juice from a few young leaves is produced by rubbing the leaves and a few drops of mwehk are then dropped into the babies mouth.

Maryam of Ulithi brought in Morinda citrifolia, called lol in Ulithian. The young fruit can be pounded and the juice given to babies to ease coughing and sore throat.
