Affective domain survey in physical science summer 2022

 Students were asked what was their favorite laboratory and what was their most disliked laboratory. Laboratories one and thirteen were the most favored laboratories. Laboratory seven was the most disliked. Reasons that laboratory was liked: One: It’s the first laboratory we did that I felt and knew it will be an interesting course. One: Because it taught me that some brands of soap can float One: Learned that some brands of soap can float Twelve: because i learned so many things from how they work with electricity and how they operate their systems when there are problems. I Thirteen: because i can see it with my own eyes about it and also it is very easy to tell whether it is an  acid or base. It's interesting to test the way things change. Site Swap Mathematics

With only three balls, and having forgotten to bring or buy colored balls, I ran this as a lecture-demonstration. I had to make do with what I had: three tennis balls, a Plush Crush, and a plastic ball that belongs nominally to Evan and Chevan. The Plush Crush and white plastic ball were a tad to large and the white ball was also a tad too light.  The usual approach was taken with my standard talk on the math stack, what does it mean to show that one has learned something - mastered a learning outcome, and the sad cruelty of a subject that leaves most students disliking the subject. I did not have the equipment to have the class engage in juggling, so the lab was left as an incomplete demonstration. Next time.

Hula hoop physics

Laboratory 14 in physical science is an investigation into the relationship between the diameter of a hula hoop and the rotation period of the hoop. This summer was the first time this laboratory had been done on Kosrae.  The small hoop is one that is in still in the form in which the hoop was packed. The next larger hoop is one with an overlap introduced, duck tape was used to hold the hoop loop together. The area of overlap can be seen at the bottom of the hoop. The purple hoop is the standard hoop, up around 107 cm in diameter. The largest hoop has a piece of three-quarter inch PCV pipe spliced into the hoop, held again by duck tape. Floral litmus solutions

In 2018 I ran the floral litmus solutions laboratory as a demonstration. I remembered that this felt unsatisfying - there is a magic in holding the test tube and watching the colors changes in front of your own eyes. This summer I brought along eye droppers and some smaller test tubes. I then modified the laboratory from the usual structure. The usual structure has been to have the students bring flowers to use, test to see if the flowers work, and then identify unknowns using a working litmus solution.  Mary with a test tube I found an old, battered periodic table on top of a cabinet. The chart allowed me to being the day with an introduction to the periodic table of elements. Including a crash and dash through electron orbitals through to hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions. The modification was that I brought in Philippine ground orchid and red hibiscus rosa-sinensis. I boiled water and prepared the litmus solution at the start of the laboratory. Colors of light

Heavy morning rain knocked out Kacifica satellite connectivity for the campus. I ran a hotspot off of my phone to connect my laptop to the Internet and then used my HDMI cable to display the morning Limits of Light video on the computer laboratory smartboard. This worked, with some loading stalls. The students on this campus are accustomed to video loading stalls that come with rainy days.  I did not have access to a microscope, so I attempted to resolve the phosphors on the Smartboard using the macro camera on my phone. That failed, although one can see that there is an underlying structure to the image. Elise After the video I had the students view the visible spectrum using a CD spectrograph. In experimenting here, I found that I could deliver a spectrum off of the top half of the CD disk while blocking the direct reflection of the opening with a piece of sandpaper. Physical science class visits Kosrae Utility Authority

On Tuesday morning in physical science class I covered the concepts of and relationships between current, voltage, resistance, power, and energy. I also showed how one can calculate the per hour cost of an appliance using the utility rate in kilowatt-hours and the power consumed by the appliance. On Wednesday the class visited the Kosrae Utility Authority. The class wishes to thank General Manager Fred Skilling for permitting and hosting the visit by the class. Thanks are due to Casey Freddy, Gerry Protacio, and Robert Taualupe for their excellent presentations and tour. Thanks also to the support team at KUA who set up refreshments for the class. The visit was both educational and wonderful! The class in front of one of the two 600 kW 13800 V high speed generators, all wearing hearing protection.
