Plants that feed us


Latisha and Charlyn describe the local snack food called pikhol made from papaya, salt, lime, pepper, and vinegar. The word has its origins in the English word "pickle."

Peter and Jarred from the outer islands of Yap presented wiish iigeig, ground banana. Grind the banana. Wrap in banana leaf. Boil. Add coconut milk. This dish is related to Pohnpeian uht idihd and Kosraean op.

Gorinna presented rotama, made from hard taro. Grind hard taro. Put in leaf with sugar. Wrap in a leaf and then boil. Then remove from leaf. Pound with coconut milk to desired consistency.

Mayoleen, Cialinda, and L-Jane presented uht pwal piahia. Pwal means to cut or to split. Thus the dish is split bananas with coconut milk topping. Split peeled cooking banana in half, cook in coconut cream/milk. The bananas are not boiled in water, they are cooked in the coconut milk.

Harden and Selten presented kehp idihd. Two seasons. Harden explained that in Pohnpei from January to May is rekenleng, the season for breadfruit and rekenpwel from August to December is the season for yam. To mark the start of rekenpwel yam will be presented to the Nahnmwarki and Nahnken. One of the dishes that may be presented is apparently kehp idihd. The yams are peeled, ground, then a portion is wrapped in banana leaf and placed in the uhm. Cooking is done in the uhm. On Pohnpei only men work with the uhm. Rekenleng is also known as rahk is also sometimes known as the season of wind - the time of year when the tradewinds come as far south as Pohnpei. The Pohnpei dictionary defines the main breadfruit season as a season of plenty, from April to August. Rekenpwel is the yam season from July to April.

Danisha and Gonzales presented uht sukusuk using uhten ruhk. Peel the banana. Put in a pot. With water. Boil. Drain water. Get a pounding stick and pound. Later you can grind coconut and then squeeze the coconut milk onto the banana.

Decklin, Ivan, and Denny-Ray presented pwoail en sawa purchased from across the road. Soft taro is boiled until soft. Serve. Athletes eat sawa prior to a long day of racing to keep energy levels up.

Bryley presented the Mortlockese snack and energy food okasi taka. The meat of a coconut is ground. Sugar is melted in a pot without water. Once the sugar melts, the ground coconut is added. The mixture is stirred until the sugar carmelizes. The result is a coconut confection.

Mishanie and Darla presented uht pirain. Pirain is derived from the English word "fried" where a "p" has substituted for the "f" and a vowel has been inserted before the "r".
