Canvas analytics week 12 fall 2022

The analytics story for week twelve is of continued loss in page views on the Instructure Canvas platform. Page views are a proxy for engagement.

Page views per week fell sharply after midterms in week eight and have never recovered. On the contrary, page views on the platform have continued to drop.

Vertical axis is logarithmic

For context, engagement as measured by page views has traditionally fallen after midterms. Week twelve often sees sharp decreases in page views. The drop seen this term is slightly less precipitous than was seen in prior terms. Factors that may contribute to this week twelve loss this term include a holiday on Thursday, the distribution of financial aid refunds, and festival season for one of the four states.

In general, all days saw a drop in page views week twelve.

On a relative basis, Monday and Friday saw relative gains against the drop seen for the Thursday holiday.

Week thirteen ahead will have two holidays, on Tuesday and Friday. Another set of holidays will occur in the third full week of November.

The number of assignments, discussions, files, and media recordings on the platform for fall 2022 saw gains.

The overall systemwide current score distribution has remained roughly the same in week 12.

The above data is based on current scores. While the online campus has a slightly lower average than the residential campuses, the performance is not surprisingly depressed. There has been anecdotal sidewalk conversations among faculty about markedly weaker performance in specific online courses this term versus prior terms, but the overall average at present does not suggest that this is happening for all online courses.

The average is more affected by the small number of very low scores. The median current score by campus is higher for all campuses and the online campus has 50% of the current scores at 77.64% or higher. This also does not support the conversation that low performance is occurring in the online courses. This is undoubtedly the case in some courses, but the overall the online campus is not performing unusually poorly relative to the residential courses.

At present 56 course level learning outcomes from the institutional bank of learning outcomes have been evaluated. The record set is currently 8,448 evaluated outcomes. For faculty who want to engage in institutional level assessment of course learning outcomes, a video explains how to access and use the outcomes stored in the institutional bank of outcomes.
