Sun dog

Sun dog to the left of the sun, sun on the right in the image below. High altitude cirrus containing ice. More often seen as an ice bow around the sun at noon, this one was taken on June 30, 2013, 6:07:36 PM. Taken from the intersection to the east of AMCRES gas station looking towards Sokeh's ridge.

Retinex enhancement of above image.

Sun dog, retinex enhancement done with Graphic Image Manipulation Program http://www.gimp.org/ There was a blue-purple band visible to the human eye when the sun dog is viewed through a polarized lens. The band is not strongly picked up by the digital CMOS sensor in the camera. The sun dog is a spectrum generated by prismatic ice crystals in a vertical alignment.
