Faculty development day 04 April 2023

Faculty development day was designed with whole faculty sessions and concurrent breakout sessions to permit faculty some degree of choice among the offerings.
All faculty opening session
Building Bridges: Strengthening Faculty-Student Interaction for Better Learning
Concurrent morning sessions
Best Practices for Canvas: Strategies for Enhancing Student Learning
Engage to Learn: Techniques for Maximizing Student Engagement
All faculty morning and after lunch sessions
Feedback Matters: Using Feedback to drive success
A Demonstration Tour of Smartboard Capabilities plus Lumio
Concurrent afternoon sessions
Assessment: Leveraging Canvas Preloaded Learning Outcomes in Rubrics and Question Banks
Unleashing the Library’s Potential: A Guide for Faculty Resource Use
An evaluation was sent to faculty who were asked to evaluate each session on the following criterion:

  • Presentation was informative
  • The amount of time was sufficient
  • Feature coverage was sufficient
  • I will be able to apply what I have learned

Faculty were asked to respond to the statements with strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree, or strongly agree with those responses converted to a one to five point scale.

In general faculty responded favorably across all four metrics for each session. The overall average was 4.53 with a standard deviation of 0.61 for 38 respondents. Note that the last listed session, Unleashing the LRC, had only five respondents in the survey.

Faculty predominantly either strongly agreed or agreed with the statements. The averages for all of the criterion across all of the sessions was between 4 and 5, between agree and strongly agree. Charting the averages only shows a series of value that vary between 4.06 and 4.70. Teasing meaning out of small differences can lead to spurious conclusions. To get a sense of whether a difference may be significant a z-score can be used. A z-score scales the average by the number of standard deviations.

Again, all of the sessions were very well received and faculty benefitted from every session. Z-scores just give one an indication of relative strengths and weaknesses. Note that the last session has a sample size of only five and none of those results are statistically significantly different from the overall mean. A z-score of zero would be a value equal to the overall mean. Positive values are above the overall mean, negative values are below the mean.

List two things you liked most about the sessions

Applies to what I am using in the classroom or what needs to be apply to classroom.

Technical information, Lumio
That we got together to work as team; meeting new faculty
The enthusiasm of all the presenters.
The presentations, demonstrations and going through Canvas as well as group sharing.
The presentors were knowledgeable. The sessions were engaging.
Topics are based on our needs
Using smart board to its maximum operation.
Very engaging interactions with presenters and context specific applications/examples
Very informative
Very interactive and new learning
Very relevant topics and well prepared presentors
We have different topics to choose from. Good to have a physical workshop.

List two recommendations for improvement

AC is too cold.  Hard to hear in back.
All topics should have been given in different times so all can attend the sessions. Not to choose which one to attend.
Ask speakers to have backup plan in case internet doesn't work
Better refreshments
Better time management.
Conduct trainings like this at the beginning of the semester or before classes begin
Great workshop.
Information from the last two sessions was overwhelming. I am one who prefers to do hands on as well. It was informative but can be task analyzed.
Lunch should be within the venue to encourage small talk or networking in both campuses.
Lunch time need to be a little longer.
microphone at MITC and more chairs at the break out sessions.
More careful time keeping....stick to the scheduled times.  (Though this was better than many previous workshops.)
More snacks and enough lunch time.
more time allotted and more topics for faculty to choose from
More time for discussions
more time for lunch
More training in the future.
Need refreshments in the afternoon.
Need to be sure that everybody already have access to smartphone prior to sharing how to use for hands on learners like myself.
need to improve timing and also presenters should focus more on their topic
Need to use mic in MITC.
Place for concurrent sessions should be spacey enough for discussion and computers are all working.
Refreshments and venue
The program can be planned a lot a head instead of receiving a schedule few days ahead of the workshop/
The sessions on the use of SMART board would have been more relevant if the smart boards in CTEC are already fully functional. These are already installed in classrooms, but the classrooms are not yet connected to the internet.
Time for presentation to be enough and all  faculties to be present so that we meet all new and old

What areas do you want to see covered in future faculty development workshops?

add canvas classes for instructors to better know how to use it effectively

Any other comments?

All good
Find ways to promote faculty networking for sharing rich experiences.
I really liked the well timing of each session.  Job well done to the planning and preparing committee.
I was pleased that faculty members were able to engage in the workshop.
lets keep it up
Make it a workshop, where we will be doing hands on, and not just listen to what speakers say and demonstrate, to appeal to faculty who learn faster and more effectively by doing than simply listening and seeing. I am one of these type of faculty. After the seminar, some bits of information that I have gathered from the speakers slip away and remain buried until I have to try to ask the speaker again (re: procedures) and do them myself.
More refreshment in the afternoon.
[The building bridges] presentation was superb.

Comments

  1. Thank you SD committee. While we admit that there is still a lot more room to improve, I am impressed with the enthusiasm and teamwork that became so evident in this event. Thank you Dana for always going steps further to provide for the faculty and the data we need to gauge what we do as a team. Kalahngan lap. Delihna Ehmes
