Faculty workshop evaluation January 2023

A systemwide workshop for faculty was held on 03 January 2023 covering the following topic areas:

  • Student Orientation in Canvas
  • Online Course Effectiveness 
  • Google Slides 
  • Canvas interface updates
  • Updates on processing of ordering textbooks 
  • Informed Academic Advising by Office of Admissions and Records 
  • Student Financial Student Aid informed academic advising 
  • Counseling collaboration with faculty and academic advisors 
  • Nuro Retention 
A follow-up survey asked whether the presentation was informative with multiple choice response options of Strongly agree, Agree, Neutral, Disagree, Strongly disagree, and Did not attend. 

Respondents tended to usually respond with Agree or Strongly agree. In general faculty agreed that the presentations were informative. With strongly agree set to five and strongly disagree set to one, the overall average was a 4.32. Individual presentation averages were as follows.



Faculty were asked to comment in response to four prompts, the comments may provide some context for the differences seen above.

List two things you liked most about the sessions

A good warm up at the beginning of the semester.

List two recommendations for improvement

All presenters should use power points so that it can be cleared on what they are presenting.
conduct separate trainings for very new faculty on certain topics they need help
Counselor presentation 
Different presentation for certain time so people attend only ones they feel they need for advising students.
Don't disable the chat. 
Enable chat so people can interact with each other for individual questions and post questions that all would like to see the answers.
Hands on breakout rooms 
More time and face-to-face assistance
More time for questions and comments.
Seminar on the use of technology devices and also their application softwares.
Some topics need more explanation (if possible face to face discussions)
Start on time.  
The sound effect at the beginning was not clear, otherwise was ok afterwards
The time for each presenter was too short.
The wait was too long in the beginning. We waited until 9.30 for the first presentation to start. 
Too many to squeeze in the morning session.

What would you like to see covered in the next faculty development day?

Canvas grade book and incorporating videos links such as skills 
Division specific sessions lead by recognized leader in the field outside the college.  As professionals, we need to keep apace of worldwide trends in the subjects which we teach.
I would like to see on how to input my files in conas.

Linking assessments with budgets, closing the loop

Manual marking of an essay type question on a quiz or test in Moodle can be done student by student but that process involves a lot of clicking and scrolling as one has to open each student's submission. There is a bulk marking screen available. In the test or quiz click on Results. At the upper left side is a stealth drop down list menu under the word "Grades" that includes the option "Manual grading." Choose manual grading. Experimenting with the PlantNet and iNaturalist apps

The application of image recognition technologies as the back end to botany apps is providing increasingly relevant search results. Over the recent winter break I began looking at whether the apps now available might be useful to the ethnobotany class here on Pohnpei. Some apps had a more regional focus in the past and were better at north american or european plants. Pohnpei has a both unique indigenous plants and many introduced plants from around the world -  a challenging environment for any image recognition system. A student working with a plant identification app for the first time My criterion was that the app had to be appropriate for use in my classroom. Traditional food dishes of Micronesia

Clara, Jennette, and Joanie presented ground hard taro cooked in an umw, effectively a hot rock oven. Pohnpeian: rotama. Pingelapese: sero. Mwoakillese: rodma. Mortlockese: Amahd. Kosrae: rodoma. After cooking in an umw the rotama is pounded with the petiole of a palm frond. Rotama is made from hard or swamp taro, known as mwahng on Pohnpei, mweian on Pingalap, pula in Mortlockese, and pahsruhk on Kosrae. In traditional times on the outer islands the women had primary responsibility for tending the taro while the men handled fishing and climbing tasks. Joesen and Noeleen presented fermented breadfruit from the outer islands of Yap such as Woleai and Eauripik. The raw ingredients were actually brought in from Yap, Noeleen prepared the maare.  The leaf wrap is ti leaf - Cordyline fruticosa.
