Canvas analytics week two spring 2023
Spring 2023 began with 1550 students on the Instructure Canvas platform week one versus 1919 students the previous term, fall 2022.
In week two of spring 2023 this number increased by 23 to 1573 students, still a 346 student drop from the fall term.
This drop in the number of students directly impacted the number of page views on the platform spring 2023 versus the same point in the term fall 2022.
Page views are a proxy statistic for engagement on the platform and includes page views for all users on the platform. The drop in the number of students was on the order of 18% while the drop in the number of page views was on the order of 29%. The factors, if any, driving the larger percentage drop in page views are unknown. Page views may not be linearly related to users on the platform.Scaling each term against the term's maximum number of page views indicates that the page view drop from week one to week two is larger in a relative scale than in past terms. One theory is that both faculty and students are becoming more efficient in their use of Canvas and are engaged in less "clicking. around" to get their work done. Another possibility is that more faculty than ever could copy course materials from the prior term and thus may have had less set up work to do for this term.
Although the number of students on the platform has declined, more courses and instructors were on the platform spring 2023 than fall 2022. 93 instructors are delivering a mix of residential, hybrid, and online courses using the Canvas LMS platform. 269 represents the number of courses loaded into Canvas from the student information system. Canvas retains courses on the platform even if the college later chooses to not run the course. Thus the actual number of active courses will be less than 269.
The highest engagement, however, is on weekdays.
This is only the end of the second week of class, early days for current scores data from the platform. 1405 of the 1573 students have scores in courses to date.
The score distribution is, as in the past, skewed right with a second peak of 292 zeroes.
A prototype pilot dashboard using a subset of students continues to demonstrate that course learning outcomes can be mapped through program learning outcomes to institutional learning outcomes, which can then be disaggregated by student information system variables.
A second prototype pilot demonstrates that current scores can also be disaggregated against student information system variables. The dashboard lists major, gender, cross-tabulated by state of origin, along with filter controls in a heat map format.
In a matter unrelated to analytics, an issue with students being unable to submit work in Turnitin was resolved this past week with a tab key hack. The submission button was being hidden below the edge of the upload frame. A video covers the solution in use at present.
