Faculty workshop evaluation Canvas August 2022

An online faculty workshop was held on August second and third. A multiple choice post-workshop was administered with the following rating scale:

  1. Strongly disagree
  2. Disagree
  3. Neutral
  4. Agree
  5. Strongly agree

Not applicable was a non-scored answer option. For a sample size of 48 respondents, the overall mean on all statements was a 4.22 with a sample standard deviation of 0.68. 

As is also typically seen in student responses on evaluation surveys,  there is a tendency to agree or strongly agree with a statement on a survey. The following ten statements were rated by faculty, with first seven prefaced by "Presentation about the following was informative:"

  2. Integrating Technology into Courses
  3. Google Workspace
  4. Linking College Course Outcomes to Canvas
  5. Timely Feedback
  6. Syllabus Template
  7. Covid Protocols
  8. The amount of time given to each subject was enough.
  9. I am now well informed of the expectations and important events for this new year.
  10. "I will be able to easily apply what I have learned from the presentations."

The relative strength becomes useful to determining what went relatively well or relatively less well.

A t-statistic was calculated against the overall mean and standard deviation. In the above chart zero is the overall mean. Statements with bars to the right of the mean performed better than the mean. The x-axis is standard errors of the mean. Performance more than two standard errors above the mean are significantly elevated in terms of strong agreement. Performance of more than one standard error above the mean can be characterized as being moderately elevated above the overall mean. 

Statements with bars to the left of the mean received, relatively speaking, a lower rating. Statements within plus or minus one of the mean are not significantly separated from the mean.

In general faculty found the presentations to be informative, in a particular the Google Workspace session (full disclosure: this author was the presenter for that session). The sessions on timely feedback, the syllabus template, and Covid protocol were also well received.

The final three questions:
  • The amount of time given to each subject was enough.
  • I am now well informed of the expectations and important events for this new year.
  • "I will be able to easily apply what I have learned from the presentations."
all underperformed the overall average, with the last one being significantly depressed below the mean. Faculty do not have confidence that they can apply what they have learned. The session on integrating technology into courses was moderately depressed below the mean.

Three open answer questions ended the survey. The comments for each are in alphabetic order, unedited except for alphabetization purposes.

I found the discussions on the use of Canvas and Covid protocol proficient to individuals.
I like the information they give on using Canvas  And the other thing was, the presentation by Dacanay and hearing all the question and discussion regarding the issue of Covid19.

List two recommendations for improvement

A program like Canvas probably could have used a trainer from Canvas to walk people through. Maybe a third day of training where we are working in our programs?
be more prepare on the organizing committee. 
Break-out rooms for each program, so they can do questions and answers pertaining to their field . 
Divide up into two groups.  It seems like only a few people were engaged.
Do breakout sessions to meet everyone's needs. Practice discussion etiquette when doing zoom meeting.
Each campus has their own workshop and do in person workshop

Have a quick simulation, provide freebies for Q&A

Overall very good presentation except for additional info about "Pronouns" in course syllabus checklist. That is not needed.

time limit for each presentation should be limited and presenters should ask questions to make sure that the listeners follow or understand the objective of the presentation.

WE SHOULD HAVE A WORKSHOP SPECIFICALLY ON HOW TO USE CANVAS WITH BOTH NEW STUDENTS AND INSTRUCTORS. THE COLLEGE SHOULD ALSO PROVIDE ALL APPS NEEDED TO SUCCESSFULLY DELIVER CLASSES ONLINE.

Moodle bulk grading of manually marked quiz and test questions

Manual marking of an essay type question on a quiz or test in Moodle can be done student by student but that process involves a lot of clicking and scrolling as one has to open each student's submission. There is a bulk marking screen available. In the test or quiz click on Results. At the upper left side is a stealth drop down list menu under the word "Grades" that includes the option "Manual grading." Choose manual grading. On the far right click on the blue "grade all" hyperlink. That will open up a all of the submissions for question one on a single page. Experimenting with the PlantNet and iNaturalist apps

The application of image recognition technologies as the back end to botany apps is providing increasingly relevant search results. Over the recent winter break I began looking at whether the apps now available might be useful to the ethnobotany class here on Pohnpei. Some apps had a more regional focus in the past and were better at north american or european plants. Pohnpei has a both unique indigenous plants and many introduced plants from around the world -  a challenging environment for any image recognition system. A student working with a plant identification app for the first time My criterion was that the app had to be appropriate for use in my classroom. Traditional food dishes of Micronesia

Clara, Jennette, and Joanie presented ground hard taro cooked in an umw, effectively a hot rock oven. Pohnpeian: rotama. Pingelapese: sero. Mwoakillese: rodma. Mortlockese: Amahd. Kosrae: rodoma. After cooking in an umw the rotama is pounded with the petiole of a palm frond. Rotama is made from hard or swamp taro, known as mwahng on Pohnpei, mweian on Pingalap, pula in Mortlockese, and pahsruhk on Kosrae. In traditional times on the outer islands the women had primary responsibility for tending the taro while the men handled fishing and climbing tasks. Joesen and Noeleen presented fermented breadfruit from the outer islands of Yap such as Woleai and Eauripik. The raw ingredients were actually brought in from Yap, Noeleen prepared the maare.  The leaf wrap is ti leaf - Cordyline fruticosa.
