Social media survey spring 2010

A convenience sample survey of 58 students in the MS 150 Statistics class at the College of Micronesia-FSM Palikir national campus spring 2010 asked about social media membership. As in prior terms, MySpace led Bebo by a small margin. FaceBook was tied with Tagged at third rank. While FaceBook has gained considerable traction on the planet, Micronesia still remains primarily MySpace and Bebo turf.

Data in the last column is from the column Social Networks: Facebook Takes Over Top Spot, Twitter Climbs and is unfortunately a year out of date. The FaceBook, MySpace, and Bebo data, however, were updated using the Quantcast data below. The rank order is still basically correct, even if the numbers have changed. The following estimated people per month from Quantcast supports the growing dominance of FaceBook throughout 2009.

The top line (blue) shows growth from 80 million people per month to 117 million during the year. MySpace, the middle line (green), lost an estimated 10 million people during the second half of the year, while Bebo, bottom line (red), lost 1.6 million people from August through December. Relative to the size of FaceBook, Bebo remains a niche player.

Note that students often have membership in more than one site, thus the numbers will not add to the sample size. Sixteen students have membership in two or more social media sites with the maximum being two students tied with five memberships each.

The category "other" includes one to two students with memberships in other social media sites. Some of the sites I recognize as having been more popular a year or two ago and may represent "remnant" memberships. Anecdotal observations around campus suggest that MySpace and Bebo still dominate social media usage among our students.

I continue to explore using FaceBook in direct academic support. Although SlideShare can support content, the quizzes that I have seen are not designed to report back data to the quiz deployer in a way that is academically useful for assessment.
