Social media survey: FaceBook rises to the top

Image
A convenience sample survey of 66 students in the MS 150 Statistics class at the College of Micronesia-FSM Palikir national campus fall 2010 asked about social media membership. For the first time in the brief history of the survey FaceBook led the pack. MySpace continues to show a decline over time among the statistics students. Bebo has statistically held ground over the past three terms. Historically MySpace and Bebo have dominated social media space among statistics students, in spring 2009 not a single student reported using FaceBook. There is a slight downward trend in the percentage of students who do not use any social media sites. Given the 70% student share of FaceBook, FaceBook would now have to be considered the favored vehicle among social media sites for connecting with students, should faculty and staff wish to use social media in this manner. In part due to the history of MySpace and Bebo having dominated student share, a number of students are members of m...

Middle come - middle serve

Reset. Click. Nothing. Reset. Click. Nothing. Reset. Click. "EN 120b/5 one seat available," says the Available Sections screen. "Pamleen!" I call out, scanning the minions scattered in chairs in and around my cubicle. The students are waiting. Just waiting for the word. My advisees are good at waiting. Pamleen scrambles to her feet. "Go, go, go..." I shout, grabbing my phone list, punching my chrono, and heading for the door. I sprint to the admissions office, students calling out across the lawn, "Go Lee Ling! Go Lee Ling!" They know the game that is afoot. Some of them are playing the game with their own laptops out in front of the library. Reset. Click. Inbound to the administration door I wave the students inside to clear the landing zone. Hitting the door in just the right place with one foot, a hip, and a hand to distribute the force, the door pops opens as if hit by a gust of wind. Paml...

The bottleneck

Image
The bottleneck this year in registration was directly in front of me. The process of advising students who had not registered in the summer was problematic. Too few foot soldiers and too many customers. The crowd was deep and wide. This is essentially the three image pan of the gathered throng, right to left. Our students have the most wonderful patience. Even after hours of sitting and waiting, they remain positive, friendly, and helpful. A student might have waited for two or three hours, only to be told the classes they needed were full. At least one student should have gone postal, none did. They are truly amazing! At the front, the work force was amazingly dedicated. Three of the advisors worked without a single break, non-stop from 8:30 until 4:00.

Sunset picnic Nett Point

Image
My son and his first cousin work on the two person bobstik event in preparation for the 2020 Olympics. Taking pictures against a setting sun is too much fun. Two cousins playing in the darking water. The lighting effect a result of shooting from mere centimeters above the water surface. The distinctive silhouette of Peipalap in the background. Warming up with homemade pizza on the beach. One young cousin is very happy to be here.

Dien on a Friday evening

Image
After having completed initial drafts of my three course outlines in the new format, submitted my syllabi , and learned that the result of the job audit is that the faculty salaries are on the fifth percentile (bottom five percent) against a regional market basket - which confirmed my gut sense that the salary issue is an existential threat to the future of the college over the long haul if not resolved - I felt celebratory and headed for Dien to enjoy the finest mud in Kitti. Soumas en kosapw Dien, Elwel Samuel, - chief of the land unit - was in residence.  The production facility in operation. Fresh pounded. Daisleen attends the college and also works for the family in the store and the market. A timer self-portrait. Dien now serves in large bottles, four dollars a bottle. One market up the road towards town the price is 4.50 a bottle, and in town bottles typically sell for five dollars. Not all bottles are equal, and, in general, the further townward one travels the hi...
