The morning session opened at 9:30 with an updated playlist focused on climate change and the incipient El Niño. I skipped the second half of the current first video. I jumped out of the playlist at the end of the fifth video at 10:00. This playlist is altered and updated every term to reflect the most recent information, and the focus this summer was on the developing El Niño. Launching from the videos that noted the arrival of a new El Niño cycle, I delivered a presentation on El Niño that could use updating to reflect the end of the triple dip La Niña. This provided a segue into a presentation on typhoons that have struck Pohnpei . This wrapped up at 10:41 AM. There are times when I am using the Canvas Teacher app from a mobile device and I want to message students who have not submitted an overdue assignment. On a desktop I would go to Grades and use the "Message students who..." functionality in the gradebook column header vertical ellipsis menu. That is not an option in the mobile app.  In my courses I have set the Grades option to automatically assign a zero at the due date as seen above in Canvas desktop. Thus all assignments are "graded" at the due date.  A consequence of this, however, is that all Submissions show as Graded in the mobile app. I cannot use "Not Submitted" to message the students who have not submitted because the due date has passed. I could have used that option ahead of the due date. Assignments have a grace period for late submission near the end of which I want to message those students who have still not submitted.  The solution is to tap on the Graded Submissions icon. Sensing that the students would not see what was connecting together the rapid fire change of topics that the summer brings, I opened with reminder of the layout of the course and noted where were are at the moment. The morning session was a series of videos on vulcanology . The last video was only there as an option. Perhaps I was too sleepy after a filling lunch, perhaps I over estimated the student's ability to pull the above from Canvas on their devices, but by party way through the lab session I realized that the students thought that mineral identification was the only goal of the laboratory. This summer the new teaching and learning health clinic construction meant that the route usually used for finding the conversion factor between arcminutes and meters was blocked and unusable. The fence prevented the use of a line of latitude of sufficient length. Exploring in Google Earth suggested that the east side of the gym might be East 158° 09.400'  From there a line of longitude around North 6° 54.595' might slide past the northeast corner of the bookstore and then make it through the east gate of the half-moon drive. That meant starting at the gym on the west end of campus. The laboratory would start at 11:30 but the laboratory would have to end by 1:00 today due to a presentation in MITC. This meant that the laboratory had to pilot a new route on a rainy day under time constraints.  The solution was to move the laboratory introduction into the morning lecture. But that meant Finding Binky would have to be assured of ending fairly early and not too far from A101....
