Assessing Learning in Introductory Statistics

Image
MS 150 Statistics is an introductory statistics course with a focus on statistical operations and methods. The course is guided by the 2007 Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) , the spring 2016 draft GAISE update, and the ongoing effort at the college to incorporate authentic assessment  in courses. A history of the evolution open data open data exploration exercises and associated presentations as authentic assessment in the course was covered in a May report .  Suzanne presents her statistical analysis to the class Three course level student learning outcomes currently guide MS 150 Introduction to Statistics: Perform basic statistical calculations for a single variable up to and including graphical analysis, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing against an expected value, and testing two samples for a difference of means. Perform basic statistical calculations for paired correlated variables. Engage in data explorati...

Survey of OpenStax online text, Desmos, and location of MS 101/3 Algebra and Trigonometry personal technology classroom at term end

Image
Summary Students found the online textbook to be generally useful and the students, by and large, recommend continued use of online texts. The students found Desmos to be a powerful and capable graphing tool that algebra and trigonometry classes should use. Some noted that Desmos was easy to use, including one noting Desmos was easier than using a scientific calculator. Roughly two-thirds of the students felt the classroom being used was a good place for MS 101, a third want to see the class held only in a computer laboratory. Possible recommendations Continue the use of online texts Continue and expand the use of Desmos in mathematics courses Consider retaining MS 101 in a computer laboratory environment Improve WiFi performance and reliability Empty, open classrooms are potentially the "student study space" that the college generally lacks. The dining hall could also be a study space during non-meal hours if WiFi were available there: WiFi availability is what mak...

A botanical stroll across campus

Image
The last day of SC/SS 115 Ethnobotany class had only single required matter to be attended to - the college course evaluation. After the evaluation an optional review tour of the plants of campus was conducted. Premna serratifolia (Pohnpeian: oahr) Spathoglottis plicata Microsorum scolopendria Falcataria moluccana Davallia solida Shanaleen, Harriet, Pelida, Sandralynn Psidium guajava Potentially Davallia pectinata Moss Davallia pectinata Technically Premna serratifolia but oahr and topwuk breed true and are distinguishable. Should not have been merged into P. serratifolia. I maintain topwuk as Premna obtusifolia. Plectranthus scutellarioides Sandralynn, Kiyoe, and Pelida Terminalia catappa Premna obtusifolia Volkameria inermis, once known as Clerodendrum inerme Ocimum tenuiflorum, previously Ocimum sanctum Hibiscus tiliaceus Left to right: Volkameria inermis, Ocimum tenuiflorum, Scaevola tacc...
