Moodle 4.5 changing open and close dates on a test for a group or individual student

Image
To change the open and close dates on a test access the Overrides item from the More menu for that test.  The default is to set a User override. Group overrides are also possible. In this course two groups were set up, one for each section of the course. An Override of the open and closing dates can be done by section. Returning to the User overrides option allows the selection of individual users for the override. A search box with a drop down list permits selection of the student. The drop down list for the course. Multiple selection is not possible here. Once a student has been selected, the open and close date override can be made. A button at the bottom allows one to save and enter another override. Some faculty have been using another option to craft exceptions. This is launched from the Grader report. At the intersection of the student name and the test (or assignment) is an ellipsis menu that access the Edit grade feature. This accesses an Edit grade dialog where a Lock aft...

Moodle behavior of bulk set override zeros for assignments

Image
A previous article explored the behavior and impact of manually setting zeros for missing quiz and test submissions. This article looks at the behavior for assignments and presumes the reader has read the previous article as background. Availability dates for laboratory two in physical science The laboratory report assignments in physical science have a due date later the same night as the laboratory. Moodle calendar Having the due date later the same day as the laboratory session keeps the display of the laboratory on the calendar on the same day as which the laboratory was done. Past experience has indicated that this helps the students who prefer to determine what to work on from their calendar. Moodle assignment notification settings Notifications are available for assignments and were set to Yes. The default setting for Notify graders about submission is No. Once Notify graders about submissions is set to Yes, the setting of Notify graders about late submissions is moot, hence th...

Moodle hyphens and the issue of manually set zeros not automatically clearing upon submission

Image
In Canvas one could set a gradebook rule that automatically set unsubmitted assignments and tests to zero at the due date. One could then have a grace period until the end of availability (cut-off in Moodle speak). With a seven day grace period beyond the due date, the zero prompted non-submitting students to get their work submitted.  Canvas automatic application of zero for missing submissions For a test that was automatically marked, the zero appeared automatically at the due date. Once the student completed and submitted the test (before the end of the grace period) their score would automatically replace the zero. No instructor intervention was required. For an assignment submitted after the due date, once the instructor marked the assignment the new score would automatically replace the zero. In Canvas empty grades (null values) did not count in the overall score, only scores of zero or higher. Moodle uses an Aggregation setting to change the behavior of empty grades, which ...

Healing plants walk Paies

First roll was taken outside the classroom. To avoid settle in time, the class did not enter the classroom.  15:33 The weather favored the class today. The students were advised to pull up chapter 3.1 of the textbook in Moodle as a field reference. The first stop was on the corner. We stayed only long enough to cover the names and uses. I wanted to deliberately shift the tempo up a notch. We only covered Volkameria inermis, Premna obtusifolia, and Scaevola taccada. Premna obtusifolia  Sinae examining Volkameria inermis 15:42 headed into up into Paies Along the road at 15:48 On the bridge for the wrap up 16:17 Back on campus by 16:30

Botany lab three seeds

Image
The spring 2024 run of this lab was a fail when all of the seeds from the local hardware store failed to germinate. This term the concept is local seeds. The use of colored filters is also being abandoned, as is the use of the large plastic domed trays. This term the plan is to use the three different growing media available at the hardware store and local seeds. Students were asked to bring seeds, but weather permitting the class will go outside to collect local weed seeds.  Forgotten item: small plastic bags to hold seeds. Rock collection boxes might have small plastic bags. The weather, however, has been non-cooperative this week. Watering can. Beakers. Paper towel. Three large plastic trays, one for each media, will each hold 38 biodegradable seed starting cups in a 10+10+10+8 configuration. With 22 students that should be sufficient for students to plant a seed in each media type with a few cups left over. How the students will know which cup is theirs remains to be...
