Healthy relationships survey results

Image
Two surveys were given to a convenience sample of 19 young adults aged 18 to 25. The sample included 10 females and 9 males. The first survey examined sexual values among the sample. The second survey examined attitudes about love. Some questions may have been misunderstood, the respondents were all working in their second language. Other questions undoubtedly carry meanings and implications that will be interpreted differently as a result of cultural factors.  The respondents were asked to strongly agree (1), slightly agree (2),  slightly disagree (3), or strongly disagree (4) with nineteen statements. The respondents had strong consensus agreement for the following statements: 3. Concern over sexual performance is quite common. 9. The quality of a sexual relationship is usually parallel to the quality of the partners' relationship in general. 17. Most people who are intimate with each other find it relatively easy to talk openly and honestly about the intimate deta...

Swizzle rate versus velocity as a demonstration of the usefulness of correlation

Image
In statistics the relation between the swizzle frequency and the speed of a RipStik provides a useful tool for looking at correlation. When data is gathered out on the sidewalk, there is no obvious relationship. Here the number of swizzles over a ten meter stretch are counted while the time to travel the 10 meters is taken with a stopwatch. Note that the 17 swizzles was for the slowest run, while fewer swizzles provide a variety of times. There is no clear pattern in the numbers, but the students can see that there must be some sort of relationship between the swizzle frequency and the speed. The reason the data looks unrelated is because both the swizzle frequency and speed are calculated values. Even now, however, the pattern probably does not jump out at one. Only once the data is plotted can one see that there is a relationship. The relationship is not perfect, and is no where near as linear as a time versus distance plot for an object moving at a constant rate. I use...

Healing Plants Walk in Paies

Image
In this term where the planet is trying to contain the outbreak of 2019-nCoV novel coronavirus, the healing plants hike is particularly timely. There is no cure for this new coronavirus, and hospitals are only providing symptomatic care - primarily oxygen. While herbal steam baths and other traditional treatments cannot cure a viral cold, they can ameliorate some of the symptoms and potentially decrease the risk of the development of viral pneumonia in the later stages of a cold virus. Change in momentum is sort of proportional to the force applied

Image
This remains my " failure is always an option " demonstration. Spring 2019 was the first term I tried this particular approach to showing that force is roughly equal to the change in momentum per second, and succeeded beyond my hope. Fall 2019 the force implied by the change in momentum exceeded the force reportedly applied. This term the force implied by the change in momentum was some 20% below the applied force. This demonstration remains a full period demonstration, and covering quiz three this term overly shortened the period. I would recommend devoting the full period to the demonstration to better lay out the approach on the board prior to hitting the sidewalk. This term covering quiz three simply took too long. Some of the equipment required My mass plus the mass of the RipStik Spring scale The set up is essentially an acceleration from a velocity of zero across a three meter distance followed by a two meter "speed trap" to obtain my f...
