7.1 7.3 Random distribution of beads

Given the confusing bimodal soap distribution of last spring , I omitted that demonstration this term and went directly into the bead distribution. Spreadsheet This term I again only looked at the distribution horizontally. Simplify. I tried to make more clear than in past terms that the middle of the scattering of beads was the mean, and that somewhere out around one and half tiles up and down was one standard deviation away from the mean. I did this prior to counting the beads per tile. The mean and standard deviation were generated by the spreadsheet. The distribution was nicely normal with 253 beads thrown, 38 more beads than the spring 215 beads. I threw all rounds, hearts, stars, letters, and animals. Smoothed out (the blue line) the distribution is only very slightly leptokurtic with a kurtosis of 0.074. Heat and temperature

I opened the Monday video playlist with a short preamble, a vocabulary advanced organizer of a sort. I asked about the room temperature today and received a guess of 80. I then showed the SMARTboard sensors screen displaying 26°C at 89% humidity. The term I brought the ice in a paper cup that contained water and which had been held in the freezer. I did not try to measure the temperature of the liquifying coconut oil.  Outdoor air temperature in the sun was 95℉. The prep room being at 21℃ and the room air temperature of 28℃ put coconut oil liquifaction between those two temperatures. The ISGlobal site was used to calculate the heat index. The SMARTboard sensors reported room temperature and humidity. 5.3 Probability is relative frequency

Monday and section 5.1 opened with coverage of homework 4.4 and a working of the ball bounce statistics but using essay versus math for MHS. The board was balky and slow dealing with the large data set. Kept fighting against a copy and paste. By 9:20 I shifted into probability, distributing a penny to every student. A flip led to 8 heads and 9 tails. I flipped to make n even and landed a tenth tail. Why didn't we get 9 heads and 9 tails? Is the simulation broken again? No, random small variations away from 50/50 are expected. What isn't expected is 18 tails. Then I moved on into the core lecture including the unnin and thunnim, dice. The dice lecture was abbreviated as time constraints impinged on the presentation. Managing a healthy weight

Chapter six includes a look at essential fat versus storage fat. This seemed to be a good time to follow up on the term start BMI measurement with a full body fat measurement. This worked better than I expected. Perhaps the students have become more comfortable with me and with the course than they were in the first week.  I posted a Tanita chart off of their Asian site for reference. This activity required 50 minutes, so only the last ten started into the chapter content. 

054 Force of friction on a moving Ripstik

In passing during laboratory five I mentioned that perhaps the force of friction acting to slow the RipStik might be measured by dragging me along the sidewalk. Then I realized that this could actually be done.  With a little more thought I realized that I could use F = Δp ÷ Δt to obtain a second estimate of the force of friction. As outline on the board, a three meter speed trap would obtain v₀. The kilogram spring scale in the prep room provided the mass m. Thus momentum p₀ was within each reach. Coasting to a stop influenced only by frictional forces would complete the calculation: (p₀ - 0)/Δt.  This would require only two times: the 3 meter speed trap tranversal time and the total time to decelerate (which included the speed trap time) Preliminary calculations suggested a force of 10 Newtons, which meant the brown 10 Newton spring scale might be sufficient. Measuring kinetic friction

The only failure today was that the ants found the donuts within twenty minutes. A donut failure. Lesson learned. Towel and tied in the future. The cups are rather sad and should be replaced by disposable cups. Kapualani and Sucie work on the effect of grit This term, guided by forgotten scales mentioned in the spring blog, nothing was forgotten.  Mirabells, Emylia, and Chem also worked with grit. Only the two 2000 gram scales were used to avoid unnecessary decimals and provide capacity to measure up to 2000 grams. One group reached 1370 grams.  Brian and Darsen were one of two weight impact measuring groups. This term I started set up early and even remembered to print out the days sheets. Rather than printing from Google Sheets, I created two single page Google Docs files with a simplified grit sheet.
