Ethnobotany day one

Image
This term I abandoned the bag of plants approach. The weather more than cooperated for an outdoor cold open. I started with Premna serratifolia. Only one student from Yap could name the plant. None of the 18 students from Pohnpei could name the plant in their language. The same happened at the Premna obtusifolia a few minutes later. There, however, one student realized the name topwuk when she heard it  A brief stop at the Ravenala madagascarensis was an opportunity to mention why I ignore some plants during this class. The weather was brutally sunny and hot. The class never stepped foot in A101. The students well illustrated the stages of language loss, better than in the classroom. Getting out of the classroom seems to help the students open up and be more willing to attempt answers. The class wrapped up with Volkameria inermis, Scaevola taccada, Morinda citrifolia, Microsorum scolopendria, and Davallia solida.

This term a petty cash for 80.00 was prepared. Thirty bags of milk chocolate M&Ms were $66.00 at Yoshie. A 1.69 ounce bag is almost always more than 1.69 ounces A scale was brought to class - this term there is only a residential section. The section was taken to the A204 limit of 30 on the theory that students would have their own mobile technology. There are 30 desktops in the room, but not all 30 are functional. Karen using a laptop As expected, students came with laptop computers. Kerryanne On addition, every student present had a cell phone. By use of the Google Sheets app, students can complete assignments on their cell phones. Ikaia Some students naturally build charts with their M&Ms. This term, as last term, a spreadsheet function was included in the introduction of the online textbook in Moodle. Submitting the result ensures that the student accessed the textbook in Moodle. The syllabus and course support materials were ...

Botany day one and two

Image
Botany day one was a course introduction only as structured by the course support materials. The first laboratory was an indoor-outdoir introduction to botanic diversity. Heading down to see the liverwort and moss The session began in A101 with a slide deck . This included a look at OneZoom . Then I took the class outside to see some exemplars of the plants in the presentation. The cycad had two cones and pollen could be seen. Polypodiopsida was covered at the cycad. Cyanobacteria was available just west of the learning resource center. Then the class went on to see liverworts and mosses.  Ipomoea triloba A search for Palhinhaea cernua to the west of the student union was unsuccessful. Ipomoea aquatica and Ipomoea triloba were seen on this leg of the walk.

Second, the shadow is not due north at 12:00 noon.  Then the class moved to A101 where the course materials in Moodle were introduced. The session was structured by going through the course support materials with an emphasis on the syllabus. The first assignment mentioned near the end of class, which was submission of a screenshot of a Desmos file.
