Two tales of the origin of breadfruit on Kosrae An excerpt from Translation of Thilenius, ed., Results of the South Seas - Expedition, 1908-1910, Sarfert: Kusae, 2 Half-Volume , by Carmen C.H. Petrosian-Husa, Anthropological Report 2008/1b Kosrae Historic Preservation Office, Kosrae Island 2008 © Kosrae Historic Preservation Office. Page 432. 10. The Origin of the Breadfruit on Kosrae. (samsam) A Ton-eel lived in Infäl-sisik, a small river in Wukat. From there he swam to the rivulet Ineläka and from there to the mountain Ineläka, beyond the source of the river. There he lay down. A tomon anüt from Tafinkol, Neko, saw him there lying on dry ground. Neko walked in a wide circle around him in order to pass him. Then the eel talked to him, »Why are you afraid of me? I am afraid because you are so big and lying on dry ground. The eel replied, »Do not be afraid. Tell your people they shall bring me over to the Tafonkol-River.« Thus, Neko sent his people away to cut wood in order to build a s...

Faculty development day April 12 Canvas training two

Image
Prior to the Instructure Canvas training a link to a slide show was released along with a set of four videos and a handout . The first video was essentially meant in good humor and was inspired by the optimal length of a TikTok video being 9 to 15 seconds. That is the attention span of the TikTok generation. The optimal length for a YouTube educational video is sometimes quoted as six minutes, and TeD talks have an 18 minute upper limit. Each new technology has engendered or catered to an ever shorter attention span - although the 50 minute lecture is now a staple at many institutions, lectures in the past were often far longer.  The original training delivered in December was designed around three levels of use for the Canvas learning management system.  Level one is the use of Canvas as an offline grade book, essentially a spreadsheet grade book, in support of a residential course with assignments and activities all occurring offline and in a class room.  Level two ...

Floral litmus solutions

Monday I began with an introduction to the periodic table. Some students have had chemistry in high school, others have not. For all of the students the periodic table was a long time ago and long forgotten. I began as I usually do, covering hydrogen and the isotopes of hydrogen which relate to the development of the "hydrogen" bomb, the Castle Bravo test , and the legacy of radioactive waste in the Marshall islands . I moved on to helium, lithium, and berylium. And, yes, there are many misrepresentations in these diagrams from a quantum mechanically correct wave-particle model.  Wednesday I reviewed the basic coverage of Monday (erased from the board in the image below).  I moved from orbital diagram to electron dot diagrams. I wrapped up with an introduction to the idea of acids and bases. I opted to run with a naked hydrogen proton as explaining the H₃O hydronium ion overly complicates matters for non-majors.  Renay tests her floral solution for reaction to baking soda ...
