Canvas analytics and assessment data week thirteen fall 2021

(Chart updated 14 November 2021 at 21:33. Article written on 12 November)

Page views on the Instructure Canvas platform dropped again week on week as two holidays impacted week thirteen for campuses located in Pohnpei state. The other states had a single holiday on Thursday. These numbers are not yet the final numbers for week thirteen. Based on week twelve performance over the weekend, week thirteen can be estimated to end up around 17180 page views. This suggests that the holidays have a negative impact on page views even as courses head into their final three full weeks of class. The unknown factor is whether disengagement is occurring on the platform - an effect seen spring 2021. Anecdotally there is a sense that with financial aid distributions having occurred in week twelve some students may have disengaged.

Week twelve saw an uptick in activity on Thursday and Friday of week twelve. Data for Friday of week thirteen is not complete.

Assignments, media recordings, and discussions showed growth that was in keeping with the overall trend after the fourth week of classes. 885 students are in courses that are active on the Canvas platform. This represents platform enrollment rather than activity and has remained nearly constant since week eleven.

Assessment

The assessment dashboards were updated. The data set is now 5752 records. The above screenshot is an example of the result of interacting with a dashboard. The dashboard displays the result of interactive exploration of the data. The assessment type was limited to assignments marked by a rubric using a five point scale (pentascale). The five point rating score  has been sorted and the number of students underneath that particular score is displayed at the lower left. Thus the dashboards are dynamic and can be explored for patterns.
