Reducing multi-path GPS signal errors in Strava under covered walkways

Image
When students walk under the covered walkways on the national campus in Palikir I often see geolocation errors in their activity track:  Those long straight spikes in the activity track are probably due to GPS satellite signal echoes off of buildings. These are called multi-path errors. I wanted to see if I could minimize the errors as well as learn how my phone would handle the complex signal environment on campus. Strava I obtained a nice, relatively clean and accurate activity track, no spikes. How does one eliminate spikes in a multi-path environment, or in any environment? Start in a place with a fairly clear view of the sky. I started at the "A" frame in front of the south faculty building as that gave my phone more sky to work with. The geolocation satellites that Strava uses are in orbit around the Earth up in space, your phone needs to "see" the sky to obtain accurate location information.  Wait at least 30 seconds after tapping on Record before tapping on ...

Strava hidden start and end of walk or run setting

Image
As of spring 2023, perhaps only after the first few walks or runs, the Strava app asks the user whether they want to hide the start and end points of their activities. The default cloaking distance is one quarter of a mile. For students using Strava to document walking or running activities, the cloaking distance can cloak an entire walk or run when done within a quarter mile of the start location.  In the above map the black segment is hidden from activities. Only I can see this first quarter mile of my run.  The above activity map is what everyone else will see: a run that started and stopped a quarter mile from where I actually started and ended my run. This is a security feature and a necessary one for many Strava users around the world. Here in these islands, however, where one lives is generally known or easily discovered without Strava. Security by home location obscurity is not a realistic option.  If one does not walk or run beyond the default quarter mile protec...

Cubot Kingkong 5 as secondary phone for exercise sport science class

Image
Cubot Kingkong 5 On Monday, March 16, 2020 the announcement of the shutdown of the college was made on the telephone intercom system. By summer 2020 classes were back, but only online. I had led the addition of an exercise sport science requirement to the general education core twenty years earlier. I felt a sense of responsibility in finding a way to deliver ESS courses in this new online reality.  First log entry 10 June 1998 I began running in 1978 during the 1970s running boom. By mid-1998 I started logging runs as a result of free logs that came with Runners world subscriptions. Nokia 03 October 2013 By 2013 I had my first cellular phone, a Nokia with a proprietary OS and few apps. LG 15 September 2014  In 2014 I moved to Android on an LG phone and first used an app to record runs. I began with a Google Tracker GPS app. By 2016 I had moved to a Motorola Moto G4 Play and the Nike+ running specific app. Over the years I had only one phone and that phone was used to support ...

Giving up gluten

Image
One year ago I resolved months of discomfort by going gluten free. At that time I felt odd, a singleton, with a strange inability to handle gluten. Morning doughnuts with my coffee, an island staple, were out. Along with bread, pasta, most breakfast cereals, and my occasional one beer with dinner to keep cholesterol at bay.  Then I learned that there were products which were specifically gluten free. I was suddenly a member of a market segment. A large enough group to support a segment of the food industry. I was clearly not alone. Still, runners's pride themselves on being healthy. And out here, in a nation that is ranked the number two nation for body mass index on the planet, being a runner causes people to think one must be unusually healthy. And able to eat anything. Surely the gluten free runner is a more unusual creature. And then the June 2012 Runner's World came in with an article titled Good-Bye Gluten? There are enough runners running gluten free ...

Let's Go Local Island Food Community of Pohnpei Run and Plant

Image
The Island Food Community of Pohnpei run, walk, and plant was held on July 7th. The Upward Bound students engaged in their summer program were the largest participating group at the event. The event included running or walking to a location to plant local plants in support of the grow local, eat local efforts of the Island Food Community. Eat right and exercise for life are critically important messages in a nation with epidemic levels of obesity and life style related illnesses. There were three planting locations, the first of which was at the Pohnpei State Legislature. The second planting location was at Ohmine school in Kolonia. Volunteers manned water stops along the route. The third planting location was along the causeway. The morning was a beautiful, sunny morning. Tools for planting and plants were pre-positioned at each location. Teams of volunteer help made the whole event possible. Planting at Ohmine school. A well exercised participant p...

Pohnpei Women's Advisory Council fun run

Image
On Saturday 10 December 2011 the Pohnpei Women's Advisory Council , the US Embassy, the Australian embassy, and sponsored a "Healthy LifeStyle Fun Walk/Run" with a 7:00 A.M. start from Spanish Wall. The route was out to the airport and back to Spanish wall. My son headed up the hill to Spanish wall from the causeway.  Most the group chose to walk, only about seven chose to run the route. Walking and juggling remains harder than running and juggling, so I joined the runners. The event was a double header with the run followed by a march to capitol hill at 9:00 A.M. As noted by the Australian embassy ( http://www.fsm.embassy.gov.au/phpi/home.html  accessed on 12 December), "the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is a global campaign to raise awareness about violence against women and its impact on a woman's physical, psychological, social and spiritual well-being." "The 16 Days of Activism began on 25 November on Internat...

KBP 5k

Image
The Katilingbang Bisaya sa Pohnpei 5k fun run is unusual in the Pohnpei 5k calender, being one of the few runs that is held on a Sunday. Temperatures were cool under cloudy skies for Pohnpei, at least from a local perspective. Given that the same sign can hit 102° by late afternoon, 86° Fahrenheit is nice and cool. The heat is not usually the issue. Pohnpei's year round high humidity is what makes running here challenging. Turn-out was strong for a Sunday morning. The route is also unique in the running calendar. The run starts at the movie theater and then heads up into town to the intersection of Kaselehlie and Elenieng. A quick left and then a right at Namiki and the run heads up through Mapusi towards Palm Terrace. A right turn brings one onto the main circumferential road. At Blue Nile the run heads up into Dolihner and then makes a left back down to the state track. When asked if I can take a picture, this gen FBer immediately struck a pose. "All righ...
