Healing plants presentations


En Neiratancy of Chuuk spoke about Psidium guajava and its use in treating diarrhea.

Jenry-Thor presented a Chuukese treatment for heartburn. A single all green frondlet from a coconut palm is fashioned into a necklace and worn around the neck. Action as a distance of some sort. 

Geneva brought a commercial cultivar of Ixora and provided a treatment that may have actually been for Ixora casei. 

Keisha brought in Senna alata and spoke on its use as a topical treatment for sensen a skin disease caused by a fungus which causes white spots on the skin. She also said the plant can cure kilin kutuwa, ringworm, a type of fungal skin disease that results in round, rough, and very itchy rashes. Senna alata, tuhke en kilinwai, is widely known for being antifungal when used topically.


Anastasia of Pehleng, Kitti, brought in kadireng (Ocimum tenuiflorum) and explained the use of kadireng to treat itchiness of the skin. The leaves are boiled until the water has a brownish tinge, and then the patient bathes in the water to relief itchiness (pwudong). She would use an alternate name for the plant that her mother taught her.

Jinisha spoke on the use of Volkameria inermis, ilau, to treat coughing.


Shirleven also brought in Volkameria inermis, ilau. The juice of the leaves is squeezed out and the resulting juice is consumed to treat a cough.


Hartsey of Kosrae also brought in kuhfahfah - Psidium guava.


Jehzy spoke about the use of Coleus scutellaroides to bring a boil to a head on Pohnpei. the Pohnpeian word for a boil is "mpwos". This is commonly misspelled with a leading "u".


Larissa, from Pohnpei, brought in koropw which appears to be Urena lobata for the treatment of wounds.
