Warning Coordination Meteorologist NWS Guam visits campus

Warning Coordination Meteorologist Marcus Landon Aydlett visited the college and gave a presentation on the western north Pacific tropical systems outlook for fall 2025.

After introductions he explained the region NWS Guam is responsible for. He also spoke about typhoon Mawar which struck Guam in May 2023. When a tropical storm is moving on the waters of the NWS region, Landon is the lead meteorologist responsible for ensuring communications are clear, timely, accurate, and communicated via as many media as possible. Protecting lives and property is the mission of NWS Guam when a tropical system is moving through the islands of their region. During the time a typhoon is threatening islands, Landon remains at the weather service office around the clock, catching only brief naps until the threat has passed.

Landon covered drought status reporting that comes from NWS Guam. NWS Guam provides wildfire risk assessment for Guam and supports firefighters with the information they need when on the fire fighting line.

The El Niño and La Niña cycles impact the risk for development of tropical systems in eastern Micronesia. Storm genesis tends to shift west during La Niña. During El Niño storms more often form east of 140° East longitude. Storm formation tends to shift east during an El Niño.

Current conditions are essentially ENSO neutral. A weak La Niña is forecast to be the most likely outlook for fall 2025.

The waters of Pohnpei sector are expected to see between one and three tropical systems by year's end, with none or one expected to develop to typhoon strength. Note that this forecast is for the whole Pohnpei sector and doesn't necessarily mean Pohnpei island specifically. Pohnpei sector is a weather region, not a political region.

Attendance was good but was impacted by a number of factors. The senior citizens team is at a board meeting in Chuuk. A simultaneous curriculum committee required the attendance of many faculty.

Landon explained that during Mawar he often found himself holding conversations on two cell phones while monitoring the latest meteorological updates.

The presentation was very informative and timely. A debt of thanks goes to WCM Aydlett for taking the time to inform a new generation of the work done by NWS Guam to safeguard lives and property.
