Faculty development workshop 05 August

Faculty development day began with departmental informational updates from the office of the president, enrollment management and student services, institutional effectiveness and quality assurance, cooperative research and extension, and administration.

The workshop evaluation asked faculty to respond to prompts by agreeing or disagreeing with the prompt. The responses were converted to numeric values:

  1. Strongly disagree
  2. Disagree
  3. Neutral
  4. Agree
  5. Strongly agree

With 52 responses recorded, averages were calculated for each prompt.

With all of the averages above four, faculty generally agreed or strongly agreed with the prompt. The strongest agreement was that the morning presentations were informative.

The first presentation after lunch was on updates in the Instructure Canvas learning management system.

Faculty expressed strong agreement with the prompts for the Canvas updates session. This might be expected as Canvas is what faculty interact with on a daily basis and which has the most immediate impact in the classroom for instructors.

The closing session for the day was on data entry into the Nuventive platform. Again, faculty agreed withe the prompts for this section. Note that the third prompt was not well aligned with the nature of the presentation and should be disregarded. The presentation was not intended to be on features, but on ensuring proper and correct entry of data into the database.

Overall averages for all three presentations indicate faculty agreed with the prompts.

Considering all prompts, the strongest agreement was seen for the first prompt, presentations were informative. The remaining three prompts were a statistical tie.

Recommendations and comments

General recommendations

  • All participants should be addressing things that we can make improvements on.
  • Can we include topics such as new teaching strategies and research.
  • Continue facilitating workshops to enhance understanding.
  • Invite other offices to attend
  • More prizes
  • We should have departmental updates in all faculty workshop especially in fall semester
  • Set up tables as many people are using their laptop, tablet or simply taking notes.

Communication recommendations

  • From time to time the presenters forgot that Kosrae and Chuuk Campuses were joining through Zoom
  • Make a Presentation folder in Google Drive wherein all presenters will upload their file/presentation so that no need for anyone to bring flash drive. Also, on Presentation folder create a folder like 2024 Fall Faculty Workshop so that it would be easy to organize and others could even browse older presentations if they like. Share these folders college wide so that anybody could download/use it if they want.
  • Making sure everyone can see the shared screen. Making sure, someone in the pilot location is reading the messengers or chats.
  • Please send transcript of all presentations or make them available.  Do that for tomorrow's online sessions also, please.
  • Presenter forgot that other campuses were present. We felt left out.
  • Leadership may consider to undergo refresher courses in public speaking, as they easily lost my attention.
  • Some issues can be shared before meeting to help guide presentation or topics to be covered related to faculty.
  • Student services updates needed to be more organized next time.
  • The discussions at the end of the workshop confused most of us.
  • The prizes are good stimulants for faculty involvement in activities. However, I cannot imagine how it must feel if I will be only hearing voices, seeing the screen and not the speakers.
  • To be more hands on and interactive
  • Updates: only key items (in bullet points/slide) with graphics; make the fonts LARGER Instead of one long speech after another equally long speech, can we have just SHORT, impactful messages/updates?

Canvas and Nuventive comments

  • Continue to provide more updates on Canvas and Nuventive
  • For Nuventive, the gamification is good although the time is a little bit long.
  • In terms of Nuventive, I'm still not clear why we have to add in data on the program learning outcome level. It should flow up automatically from the course level, once the mapping is done.
  • Need more explanation on Nuventive
  • We could not see most of the Nuventive Update, actually only one question.

Time comments and recommendations

  • Better time management and better coordination (clear audio and visible data)
  • Follow set time, stronger coffee
  • Food and utensils should be ready as early as possible.
  • Have at least 5-minute break between each departmental office report.
  • Limit time for each presenter
  • Maybe shorter
  • More time for questions and discussion for the information sharing.
  • Start and manage time well for each presentation.
  • Too much time spent on icebreakers
  • When people are sitting in a workshop for too long and towards the end something new is added to the agenda, sometimes it maybe tiring and hard to process the information after a long day.
