Canvas: Accessing an overdue New Quiz from List View takes student to submissions screen

I was working with a student and learned something I did not know and could not have known without meeting with them. The student had not taken a New Quiz before the due date, but the quiz was still available to be taken. The quiz provided for up to two attempts, and the student had not yet taken the quiz once, let alone twice. All I knew was that the student was seeing "No preview available" when she tried to access the still open quiz. I could not see why she was unable to access the quiz, so I requested that she come in to see me as the course was not one my own courses. 

The student came in with their laptop and showed me what was happening. 


The student accesses her assignments using the List view available to students in Canvas. When she clicks on Quiz #1 both she and I expect to be taken to the "Begin quiz" screen. But that is not what happens.


That link takes her to the "Quiz submissions" screen, the screen a student sees after taking the quiz. But she has not taken the quiz. She is being taken to the incorrect place. I suspect that this might be part of the "teething" problems with New Quizzes. New Quizzes can be used, but there are some details that are still under development. Perhaps this is one of them. 


She can, however, take the quiz. She just has to access the quiz a different way. The optimal path would be to go to the Quizzes item, but that item is hidden (see her course menu above: no Quizzes item is displayed). The only way for her to get to the quiz is through the Modules. She can get to the quiz in the Modules by scrolling down to week five and clicking on Quiz #1.


The quiz then opens to the "Begin quiz" page. This was not an obvious path to the Quiz once week five had passed.


I recommend that the Quizzes item be made visible to students in the left hand course panel, it is currently hidden.


This can be done by the instructor by enabling the item in Settings: Navigation tab as seen above.

The instructor can still control what the students can see using the individual publish/unpublish icons on the right. Making that item visible would provide a more logical path to access a quiz for students using the List View.

The  Google Statistics  add-on for Google Sheets can display multiple boxplots in a single chart. The key is the layout of the data. One column should be the variable by which the data is to be grouped, the other column should be the data to be box plotted. Set up the Statistics add-on with the data to be plotted as the variable, and the grouping column as the "by" variable. In this image I had deselected all but the boxplot option, the result was the appearance of the Moment, Standard errors, and Confidence intervals options. Plotting polar coordinates in Desmos and a vector addition demonstrator

In an earlier post I noted that Desmos did not directly plot polar coordinates. Not only was I incorrect, but Desmos responded to my blog to correct me! Although I had at some point seen that one could define a function f(x)=3x+5 and then have Desmos calculate f(6), I had not absorbed how this might be used to plot polar coordinates. The above works beautifully . Realizing that I could effectively program Desmos, I applied this thinking to demonstrating how to add two vectors when given the magnitudes m and the direction angles theta. The graph calculates the i and j components for the two vectors and then adds the vectors, graphically displaying the result while also providing information on the magnitude and direction of the vector sum. m1 and theta1 are the magnitude and direction angle for one of the two vectors, m2 and theta2 are the magnitude and direction for the other vector. Traditional food dishes of Micronesia

Clara, Jennette, and Joanie presented ground hard taro cooked in an umw, effectively a hot rock oven. Pohnpeian: rotama. Pingelapese: sero. Mwoakillese: rodma. Mortlockese: Amahd. Kosrae: rodoma. After cooking in an umw the rotama is pounded with the petiole of a palm frond. Rotama is made from hard or swamp taro, known as mwahng on Pohnpei, mweian on Pingalap, pula in Mortlockese, and pahsruhk on Kosrae. In traditional times on the outer islands the women had primary responsibility for tending the taro while the men handled fishing and climbing tasks. Joesen and Noeleen presented fermented breadfruit from the outer islands of Yap such as Woleai and Eauripik. The raw ingredients were actually brought in from Yap, Noeleen prepared the maare.  The leaf wrap is ti leaf - Cordyline fruticosa.
