Canvas: Sending different Google Forms questionnaires to different sections in the same course
Suppose I have a course consisting of a mix of online and residential sections and I want to distribute a different questionnaire to each section as a Google Form.
One option would be to send the link to the form as an Inbox message where the recipients were specified by section.
Suppose further, however, that I want to put the link to the questionnaires in the course Modules so that students only see the link for their questionnaire?
First I set up two assignments, zero points, submission type "No submission" and assign each assignment to the intended section.
There is a warning dialog. Just click on Continue. This is what you mean to do.
Set up the link for the other section, in this case the online section, in the same way. Now you have two assignments, each assigned to one section.
Add both assignments to the desired Module. You will see both.
A student in the residential section, however, only sees the assignment assigned to them.
A student in the online section only sees the assignment for the online section. And, yes, this student in an online section has 103 unread Inbox messages. The struggle to communicate is real.
If one is willing to forgo use of Google Forms, Classic Quizzes in Canvas has an Ungraded Survey option. Quizzes, like assignments, can be assigned by section, so one could make two different Ungraded Surveys, assigning each the desired section. With an Ungraded Survey assigned to only one section, only that one section would see the quiz. As far as I know the two Ungraded Surveys could be added to modules and would behave just like the addition of the two assignments.
Another possibility would be to send the Google Forms link out by email to the students' edu accounts, the addresses can be found in People for a course.
