Social media platform and technology survey
A look at social media platform and technology use among students based on a voluntary convenience sample survey of 63 students in my courses spring 2023 and summer 2023.
Facebook still holds the largest share of the "student market" among my students. YouTube is a strong second place. Instagram and TikTok tie for third place, while SnapChat sees fairly significant use.
The "big three" in terms of where they spend the most time are Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok in that order. Twenty percent of our students spend their most time on TikTok. Underneath that are a larger pool who may check in occasionally. Instagram at 8% is not a significant "player" in the "student market" for my students.
The YouTube dominance has an interesting implication. Given that the YouTube algorithm recommends videos based on what the user watches, putting academic videos in YouTube could impact the algorithm to show similar videos. This could have a beneficial learning side effect for students - they might encounter other videos on the same topic. Thus if a student watches a video on velocity equations that I have made, YouTube may suggest other videos on velocity.
Ownership rates for cell phones and laptops are very high, at least among students in my courses.
While the majority of students no longer depend on college computers and labs to access the internet, a significant 30% still rely on college facilities for internet access. This has implications for both the computer labs and computer facilities in the learning resource centers.
The split between students who access the internet from home and from a college campus is an even split, with many students accessing the internet from both places. The home access rate is an indicator of internet penetration in the home market. A quarter of the students report using public access points.
