Canvas Teacher app: Message students who have zero automatically assigned for an assignment

There are times when I am using the Canvas Teacher app from a mobile device and I want to message students who have not submitted an overdue assignment. On a desktop I would go to Grades and use the "Message students who..." functionality in the gradebook column header vertical ellipsis menu. That is not an option in the mobile app.

In my courses I have set the Grades option to automatically assign a zero at the due date as seen above in Canvas desktop. Thus all assignments are "graded" at the due date.

A consequence of this, however, is that all Submissions show as Graded in the mobile app. I cannot use "Not Submitted" to message the students who have not submitted because the due date has passed. I could have used that option ahead of the due date. Assignments have a grace period for late submission near the end of which I want to message those students who have still not submitted.

The solution is to tap on the Graded Submissions icon.

Because the missing submissions are already marked zero, this displays all 25 students in the course including the students who have zeros due to not submitting. I only want to message the zeros. To filter the list, tap on the funnel at the upper right seen in the image above.

This provides a list of options. I will need to use Scored Less Than even though these assignments are not submitted. That option will only work prior to the due date.

I then set the Scored Less Than to 1.

This gives me the students with zeros. Note that the filter can be cleared at the upper right if desired. Tapping on the envelope icon at the lower right opens a message to only these five students, one of whom will be the Test Student.

I delete the Test Student and then compose my reminder message below. When I am done, I click on the paper airplane looking icon at the upper right to send the message.

Being able to work from a mobile device using the Canvas Teacher app allows me to work from wherever I am over a cellular link.
