Floral morphology

Floral morphology began with a floral playlist. The playlist was terminated at The Meaning Behind your Flowers as this links to the assignment for that day. Serendipitously I inserted a floral time lapse video ahead of The Meaning Behind your Flowers and this proved to be the perfect place for this video. With the video set to mute, the video provided an opportunity to orally quiz the class on floral structure and monocot versus dicot. The new list must have played until around 4:00 or thereabouts. Then I introduced the affiliated assignment:

Flower colors have meaning. Pink means compassion, orange means energy, yellow means friendship, red means love, white means purity, and purple means royal. Which one is most like your personality? Are you compassionate, energetic, friendly, loving, pure, or royal? Decide which you are and then upload a picture of a flower the color that goes with your personality. The upload is restricted to image file types jpg, jpeg, and png.

  • Compassionate: You see yourself as being caring, kind, helping others especially those you do not know, putting yourself second. On the up side you are known for being giving. On the down side some people tend to take advantage of you. Your color is pink.
  • Energetic: You see yourself as being active, you look forward to the next activity, you enjoy playing sports, you are naturally competitive. On the up side you enjoy good health and an optimistic outlook. On the down side is that you sometimes have difficulty relaxing and unwinding. Your color is orange.
  • Friendly: You see yourself as being social, outgoing, you prefer to be with friends. On the up side you enjoy the comfort and companionship of always having friends around. On the down side is that you may not be all that comfortable being alone with yourself and your thoughts. Your color is yellow.
  • Loving: You see yourself as deeply emotionally committed to a partner in life, you are passionate, devoted, and romantic. On the up side you enjoy a strong bond with your partner. On the down side is that other people may see you as pulling away from friends, you are also at emotional risk if the one you love does not have the same level of devotion in return. Your color is red.
  • Pure: You see yourself as being separate from others, often standing alone, you tend to do your own thing. On the up side the moods and opinions of others do not affect you. On the down side is that people see you as distant and remote. Your color is white.
  • Royal: You see yourself as being a natural born leader, decisive, commanding, and wise. On the up side you know how to get things done. On the down side some people might say you tend to be demanding. Your color is purple.

The weather encouraged a walk but the campus sports few flowers at this point. I started behind the south faculty building with a six petaled Gardenia taitensis, undoubtedly a suboptimal starting point. Start with the exception to the rule. Then the eight petalled Jasminoides sambac. From there the class viewed the Hymenocallis littoralis.

At the LRC the Turnera ulmifolia was still in bloom.

Harden, Ivan, Latisha

After looking at Plumeria obtusa I headed in no particular direction.

After passing Spathoglottis plicata at the counseling office, I headed north. The swamp was surprisingly dry today, so this provided the opportunity to visit Spathoglottis micronesiaca.

Darla in the lead, Decklin, Ketzana, Ann-Mary

Only a handful of students were intrepid enough to follow me into the grassland.

Decklin with a bird of paradise flower as decor, Ketzana behind.

Spathoglottis micronesiaca

The Spathoglottis micronesiaca provide an opportunity to briefly cover endemic plants, but only six students had come out into the grasslands.

Ann-Mary, Gonzales, Ketzana, CharlynRose, and Latisha. Behind Gonzales appears to be Larcyann.
