Monilophytes and Lycophytes in ethnobotany class

Image
SC/SS 115 Ethnobotany began with a hike into the forest to observe and learn about lycopodium and ferns. Lycopodiella cernua and the sun-loving fern Dicranopteris linearis . Lycopodium is a member of the division Lycophyta, the ferns are members of Monilophyta. After a fire three years ago, and over-harvesting due to decoration for graduation, the Lycopodiella was scarce. This term the Lycopodiella appears to have recovered and expanded along the ridgeline. The class then paused at the top of the steep slope where Nephrolepis spp. and Thelypteris maemonensis   were observed. A tree at the top of the trail now has a healthy growth of the lycopodium  Huperzia phlegmaria   on the trunk. Strobili have developed on this plant. Local uses and meanings of these plants was also explained, along with names in the local languages. The local name for  Microsorum scolopendria  was covered. Its function as a  mwarmwar for protecting a dancer from  s...

Student PAR-Q, stress, and life change units studies

Image
Twenty-five students in a health science section responded to three different instruments focused on physical activity readiness and stress. The twenty-five students have a median age of 18, a mean age of 19.68, with a sample standard deviation of 3.21. The youngest student is 17, the oldest is 32. The mode is 18 years old. Of the 25 students, 23 list the island of Pohnpei as their home state, two list the state of Yap as their home state. The section has 15 female students and 10 male students. The class is "young" with 75% of the students under the age of 20. Twenty-five students responded to a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire form. A summary of the positive results is led off by chest pain. Seven students reported that in the past month they have experienced chest pain when they were not doing physical activity. Six students reported chest pain during physical activity. Three students reported bone or joint problems that could be made worse by physica...

Lubuntu 12.04 desktop search is Recoll

Image
Desktop search options for Lubuntu 12.04 are not obvious. The Lubuntu Software Center suggests Desktop Search (tracker-gui). I installed the software, but could not determine how to find what I wanted to find - which is text in any opendocument format file, Microsoft Word and Excel files, Thunderbird emails, and HTML files. Frustrated, I uninstalled tracker-gui and hit the web. There I learned that Google had long ago dropped their namesake desktop search product, although I still use Google Desktop on a Win 7 rig. I also quickly learned that a dog named Beagle had also passed away. I did see some traffic on a package called recoll, but it was not listed in the software center. Fortunately I have been using Synaptic happily for many years. Recoll was in the repositories. After installation Recoll indexed my hard drive happily and quickly. After indexing, I stumbled onto the Show Missing Helpers. All of the helpers were also in the repositories. With them on board and index update...

Saladin dual pane file manager

Image
The extended temporary loss of ADSL at home has forced me back to using a USB key to synch critical files. I abandoned xplorer2 years ago because the program stealth altered the search behavior of FireFox.  Looking for a dual pane file manager with synch capacity led me to look at Double Commander. I could not learn how to get Double Commander to handle synch chores, but Saladin was a quick easy learn with an interface that is better integrated into Windows 7. The package is small with the 64 bit Win 7 version only a 4.9 Mb download. The files highlighted in red above were selected using Control-Shift-M directory level comparison. The red represents the newer files, a drag and drop brings the USB drive in I: into synch with the hard drive copies. As the other unit to be synched is Lubuntu 12.04, I tried Tux Commander but it would not launch. A note in the reviews suggests Tux Commander has problems with 12.04. I then found that Gnome Commander ably did the job as a very cap...

Enigma

Image
In SC 101 Health Science I try to liven up Fridays with surveys and activities. This Friday I jumped off from a side bar on managing stress by relaxing to music on page thirty-nine of Edlin and Golanty's Health and Wellness tenth edition . Prior to playing a musical piece I had the students measure their resting heart rate and complete a brief stress and tension survey I cobbled together by editing extant on line surveys. Before Enigma After Enigma Resting heart rate Before Enigma After Enigma Yes Sort of No Yes Sort of No My body feels tense all over. 2 1 0 2 1 0 I feel pressured because of my studies and tests. 2 1 0 2 1 0 I have a headache. 2 1 0 2 1 0 I have a nervous sweat or sweaty palms. 2 1 0 2 1 0 My muscles are tense. ...

RipStik Linear Motion

Image
SC 130 Physical Science section 012 linear motion opted to use the sidewalk to the west of the B building this term. The catch is that the sidewalk has more slope than I anticipated. So I opted to go uphill, attempting to hold a constant swizzle against the rise. The chart suggests I was essentially successful. The data is linear enough to convince one of the linearity of constant velocity motion. Or constant swizzle motion.

Math curriculum support workshop number two

Image
On Friday August 24th a second in a series of work shops intended to provide support to the instructors at Madolehnihmw high school was held from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. I was delayed in my arrival due to the addition of a college section from 2:00 to 3:00. I left the college at about 3:15 and arrived just a few minutes after 4:00 at MHS. After some discussion, the participants asked to have angles and trigonometry reviewed. The session covered a lot of ground and was very productive for everyone. The group decided to next meet on Friday 21 September at the same place and time. I owe thanks to the MHS team for being there late on a Friday and for the bananas! Sometime in October the larger math curriculum alignment group will meet.
